Nothing Phone 2 Gaming Review: Is It a Budget Gamer's Delight?

Introduction: Can a Budget Phone Handle Serious Gaming?

Mobile gaming has exploded, but budget phones often struggle with sustained performance. The CMF Phone 1 enters this crowded segment with a clean software advantage — no bloatware means more system resources for your games. But is that enough? We put this phone through an intensive gaming test to find out if it truly delivers for casual and mid-core gamers.

BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India) Performance

BGMI is the gold standard for testing budget gaming phones. On the CMF Phone 1, we were able to run the game at Smooth graphics + Extreme frame rate (60 FPS). Initial drops were buttery smooth, with consistent 55-60 FPS during looting and close-range combat. However, after 30 minutes of continuous play, frame drops to 40-45 FPS started appearing, especially in the final zones with multiple players and smoke grenades. The phone did get warm (around 42°C) but not uncomfortable. Overall, BGMI is very playable for 2-3 hour sessions if you take small breaks.

Call of Duty: Mobile & Free Fire Max

Call of Duty: Mobile ran like a dream. At High graphics + Max frame rate, the game stayed pinned at 60 FPS for the entire duration. No stutters even during chaotic 10v10 matches. The 120Hz display makes a noticeable difference in scoping and aiming — everything feels snappy and responsive. Free Fire Max is even lighter; it ran at Ultra graphics with zero frame drops. Touch sampling rate felt adequate for quick 180-degree turns. If you're primarily a COD or Free Fire player, the CMF Phone 1 will serve you well.

Genshin Impact & Heavy Games

Genshin Impact pushes even flagship phones to their limits. On the CMF Phone 1, you'll need to set everything to Low graphics and 30 FPS target. Even then, you'll experience occasional stutters in Liyue and Sumeru cities. Combat with multiple elemental reactions causes frame drops to 20-25 FPS. Is it playable? Yes, for daily commissions and farming. But for serious exploration or boss fights, you'll want a more powerful device. Other heavy games like Diablo Immortal and PUBG: New State ran fine at medium-low settings.

Thermal Performance & Battery Drain

After 1 hour of continuous BGMI gaming, the CMF Phone 1's maximum temperature reached 44°C around the camera module. This is warm but not hot enough to cause discomfort or throttling. The graphite cooling system does its job reasonably well. Battery drain during gaming is about 12-15% per hour, which is excellent. You can easily get 6+ hours of continuous gaming on a full charge. Charging speed (18-25W) means a 30-minute charge gives you about 1.5 hours of gameplay.

Display & Touch Response for Gaming

The 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED display is a gamer's delight in this price range. Colors are vibrant, and the high refresh rate makes motion look fluid. Touch sampling rate is around 180Hz (not the 360Hz or 480Hz found on gaming phones), but we didn't notice any input lag in real-world testing. The display gets bright enough for indoor gaming, though direct sunlight is a challenge. An added bonus: the flat display means no accidental edge touches — perfect for competitive shooters.

Audio & Haptic Feedback

The single bottom-firing speaker is a weak point for gaming. It gets loud but lacks stereo separation, making it hard to hear footsteps directionally. Use headphones — there's a 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth 5.3 support. Haptic feedback is surprisingly good for a budget phone. Vibration feels tight and responsive during gaming, adding to the immersion. Nothing OS's Game Mode is minimal but useful — it blocks notifications and optimizes resources with one tap.

Final Verdict: Who Should Buy This for Gaming?

The CMF Phone 1 is a fantastic choice for casual and mid-core gamers who play BGMI, COD, Free Fire, or similar titles. The clean software, smooth display, and efficient battery make for a great experience. Hardcore Genshin Impact players or those who demand sustained 60 FPS in BR titles should look at Poco or Realme with Dimensity 7000 series chipsets. But for most budget gamers, the CMF Phone 1 offers a balanced, enjoyable gaming experience without the bloatware headache. Highly recommended for students and young gamers.
